Verandah is in the charming city of Fort Myers, whose
history dates back to the 1500s, when Ponce de Leon explored
areas along Florida's Gulf Coast. Spanish and Cuban settlers
created temporary fishing and farming camps along the coast,
but for years Southwest Florida remained a rugged and
isolated area. When Florida became a U.S. Territory in 1821,
Fort Myers was built along the Caloosahatchee River and
named in honor of Colonel Abraham C. Myers, the son-in-law
of the commander of Fort Brooke in Tampa.
By the late 1800s, Fort Myers had become the second largest
town on Florida's Gulf Coast south of Cedar Key. Its beauty
drew two of America's most famous entrepreneurs - Thomas
Alva Edison and Henry Ford - to become long-time residents.
In fact, the first Ford car dealership was opened in Fort
Myers.
Today, the older downtown area and the City of Fort Myers
historic districts have retained much of their timeless
charm, and proper preservation measures are in place to
ensure that charm will be treasured for many generations to
come.
